Tim– you are on the right path, even if you go broke following it. As a rule, I don’t trust the big banks, insurance companies, and mutual fund issuers any more. They are, most of them, too intent upon lobbying Congress and state legislatures to make theft legal. My checking account is with an up-to-now locally-owned bank, although they are now in the process of becoming a company with publicly-traded stock. My savings are with TIAA, Vanguard (read John Bogle), and Treasury Direct.
If you can get paying clients out of local banks, modest A M Best triple-A insurers, and mutual fund issuers who don’t spend millions a month on K Street, power and prosperity to you!!!
